Identity
Opera Undone
Making Productions / King's Head Theatre / Trafalgar Studios
FORMAT.LDN collaborated once again with Making Productions on the campaign design for Opera Undone, a joint venture between the King’s Head Theatre and Trafalgar Studios. As with many theatre campaigns, the project unfolded in two stages: an initial on-sale creative designed to establish the visual world of the production, followed by a second phase in which the campaign was developed further once casting had been confirmed.
Working closely with the client, we first created a teaser-led visual identity built around a striking 3D scene featuring metallic gold fabric draped across a piano. This became the foundation of the campaign’s on-sale artwork — an image designed to introduce the production with atmosphere, intrigue and a strong sense of theatrical elegance. The metallic fabric became the defining visual device of the identity, giving the work a sculptural, luxurious quality while creating an immediate and ownable campaign language.
As the production moved into its next phase, the creative was developed to incorporate the lead character while retaining continuity with the original design. Using the same visual language and material finish, we created a sculptural 3D dress and composited the cast photography into the piece, allowing the campaign to shift naturally from abstract teaser imagery into a more character-led expression. This two-stage approach gave the production a consistent identity from on-sale through to the fully launched campaign, while allowing the visuals to evolve in step with the show itself.
To extend the campaign beyond static artwork, we also developed animated versions of the fabric-led visuals, using subtle movement to bring added depth and screen presence to motion posters, adverts and digital assets. The result was a cohesive and visually distinctive campaign world that combined still and moving image, giving Opera Undone a refined and highly theatrical presence across its rollout.
